In September 1941 Smith played in the famous 8-1 League win over Rangers, scoring the last goal while running with his shin-guard in his hand. He told me a lovely story about that game many years later:

famous and quite normal practice. I remember that after that game I walked out of the ground and round and round to the nearest bus stop. There a fan was reading his sports paper and said to me: “It says here that Hibs beat the Rangers 8-1, what nonsense, it must be a mis-print.” When an eight is poorly printed it can look like a zero, so I knew what he meant, but I was able to say: “No, it isn’t a mis print it’s right enough, it was 8-1. I know, I was there!”
